How to Change Font on Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone and Word
“How do I change the font?” has a different answer depending on where you are: a Word document, your phone’s screen, a WhatsApp message or your computer. This guide covers the most common places, with the exact steps for each.
How to change font in Microsoft Word
For some text:
- Select the text you want to change.
- On the Home tab, click the font name box (it usually says Aptos or Calibri).
- Pick a new font from the list. You can type the font name to find it faster.
To change the default font for all new documents:
- On the Home tab, open the Font dialog box (click the small arrow in the corner of the Font group, or press Ctrl + D).
- Choose your font and size.
- Click Set As Default, then choose All documents based on the Normal template and click OK.
Don’t see the font you want? Install it on your computer first (see below), then restart Word.
How to change font in Google Docs
- Select your text.
- Click the font menu in the toolbar.
- Choose a font, or click More fonts at the top of the list to add any Google Font to your menu.
How to change font on Windows
You can add new fonts to Windows easily:
- Download a font from Originalfonts and unzip it.
- Right-click the .ttf or .otf file and choose Install.

Changing the font Windows itself uses in menus and windows is a different story. Microsoft doesn’t offer a setting for it in Windows 11, and the old registry tricks don’t work reliably and can leave some menus in the wrong font. If text is simply too small, change the size instead: Settings > Accessibility > Text size.
How to change font on a Mac
To add a font, double-click the font file and click Install in Font Book. It then appears in Pages, Word, Photoshop and other apps.
macOS doesn’t let you change the system font used in menus. To make text bigger, open System Settings and search for Text size.
How to change font on Android
On Samsung Galaxy phones:
- Open Settings > Display > Font size and style.
- Tap Font style and choose a font.
- For more choices, tap Download fonts to get more from the Galaxy Store.
On the same screen you can change the text size and turn on bold text.
On other Android phones: many brands, including Xiaomi, OPPO and vivo, let you change the font through their Themes app or under Settings > Display. Google Pixel phones let you change the text size and turn on bold text, but not the font style. Be careful with “font changer” apps that ask for lots of permissions or want you to root your phone.
How to change font on iPhone
Apple doesn’t let you change the iPhone’s system font, but you can:
- Make text bigger or bold: go to Settings > Display & Brightness and use Text Size and Bold Text.
- Install extra fonts for apps: font apps from the App Store can install fonts on your iPhone. You’ll find them under Settings > General > Fonts. They work in apps that support custom fonts, such as Pages, Keynote and Mail, but not everywhere.
How to change font in WhatsApp messages
WhatsApp has built-in formatting. Type these symbols around your text:
- Bold – put asterisks on both sides: *text*
- Italic – put underscores on both sides: _text_
- Strikethrough – put tildes on both sides: ~text~
- Monospace – put three backticks on each side: “`text“`
You can also select text while typing and choose Format (or the ⋮ menu) for the same options.
How to change font on Instagram, TikTok and other apps
Most social apps don’t let you pick a font for your bio or captions. The fancy styles you see are special Unicode characters you can copy and paste. See Copy and paste fonts and Instagram fonts.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn’t my new font show up?
Close and reopen the app after installing the font. If it still doesn’t appear, make sure you installed the .ttf or .otf file itself, not the ZIP.
Can I change the font of text in a picture or video?
Yes, in an editing app. Try CapCut, Canva or our Logo Text Maker, which turns your text into a PNG image in any font.
