Instagram Fonts: Get Different Fonts for Your Bio, Stories and Posts
Instagram gives you a handful of fonts for Stories and Reels, but none for your bio, captions or comments. So how do other accounts get fancy text in their bio? And which fonts should you use for your posts and carousels? This guide covers every place you can change fonts on Instagram.
What font does Instagram use?
Instagram’s logo and branding use Instagram Sans, a custom typeface Instagram introduced in 2022. Inside the app, most text (your feed, bio and comments) is shown in your phone’s own system font, so it can look slightly different on iPhone and Android. You can’t change the font Instagram uses for its menus.
Fonts in Instagram Stories and Reels
When you add text to a Story or Reel, Instagram shows a row of font styles above the keyboard.
- Open the Story or Reel editor and tap the Aa (text) button.
- Type your text.
- Swipe through the font styles shown above the keyboard and tap one to use it.
- Use the other buttons at the top to change the color, alignment, background and effects.
Long-standing styles include names like Classic, Modern, Typewriter and Strong, and Instagram adds and renames styles from time to time, so your app may show a slightly different set.
Fonts in your Instagram bio, captions and comments
Instagram doesn’t let you pick a font for your bio, captions or comments. The “fonts” you see in other people’s bios are actually special Unicode characters: letters from maths and other symbol sets that look bold, italic, cursive or outlined. Because they are characters rather than a font, you can copy and paste them anywhere.
Here’s what they look like:
- Bold: ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐๐๐ฆ๐
- Italic: ๐๐๐ข๐ ๐๐๐๐
- Script: ๐ดโด๐๐ ๐ฉ๐ถ๐โฏ
- Bold script: ๐จ๐ธ๐พ๐ป ๐๐ช๐ถ๐ฎ
- Gothic: ๐๐ฌ๐ฒ๐ฏ ๐๐๐ช๐ข
- Typewriter: ๐๐๐๐ ๐ฝ๐๐๐
You’ll find more styles, and how to use them, in our guide to copy and paste fonts.
Things to know before you use fancy text
- Screen readers struggle with it. People who use screen readers may hear each letter read out strangely, or nothing at all. Keep important information in normal text.
- It can make you harder to find. Keep your name field and username in normal letters so people can search for you. (Instagram usernames only allow letters, numbers, periods and underscores anyway.)
- Some phones show boxes. Older devices may not have all these characters and show empty squares instead.
- Use it as decoration. A styled word or two in your bio looks great. A whole bio in fancy letters is hard to read.
