Hindi Fonts: 20 Free Unicode Devanagari Fonts to Download

Looking for a good Hindi font? Whether you’re designing a wedding card, a YouTube thumbnail, a school project or an office document, the right Devanagari font makes Hindi text look clear and beautiful. Here are 20 free Unicode Hindi fonts you can download today, plus what you need to know about Unicode and Kruti Dev.

Unicode vs Kruti Dev: which Hindi font should you use?

Before choosing a font, it helps to know that there are two very different kinds of Hindi fonts.

Unicode Hindi fonts (like Mangal, Nirmala UI and every font in this list) store real Hindi letters. Text typed with a Unicode font:

  • shows correctly on every phone and computer, even if the other person has a different font,
  • can be searched, copied and pasted,
  • works on websites, social media, WhatsApp and Google Docs.

Legacy fonts like Kruti Dev are older, non-Unicode fonts from before Unicode became standard. They type English keyboard characters and simply draw them as Hindi letters. Text typed in Kruti Dev turns into random English letters and symbols on any device that doesn’t have the font. Kruti Dev is still used in some government offices and typing exams in India, but for almost everything else, Unicode is the better choice.

Need to move text between the two? See our font converter guide, which covers Kruti Dev to Unicode conversion.
